Problem Nails
I have always had what i considered to be nice nails until recently now they split easily and its really frustrating me. My nails grow quickly, i think i need something that will strengthen them and thats not going to cost a fortune, i used to be the envy of my sisters all whom have to have fale nails i want my lovely nails back :-(
Hi. I already use Avon nail strengthener, but my nails are still spliting. Eating jelly squares seems long term and a good solution but what can I do in the short term. Even running my fingers through my hair seem to start a new spit and my nails are as short as I can cut them.
Hiya,
First check with the Dr that your thyroid is working properly as that can cause nail prpblems. If its okay, then the cheapest thing I found (many years ago off my headmistress) was jelly cubes or even set jelly. It has gelatine in it (No good for vegetarians, sorry.) which is really great for nails (& bones) If you dont like jelly and want quicker results, then Avon's nail strenghener is good. Just use it as nail varnish, on its own or under varnish. I use this nowadays as I'm watching my weight, its not expensive about £5, sometimes cheaper when they have offers on. Well worth a try eh ???

I have to add something here, as a trained nail tech who prefers natural nails I have to tell you that most nail products including OPI nail envy contain formaldehyde and toluene which are now recognised as not being the best for your nails. There are a few companies that are removing all the nasties, Nubar and Zoya to name a couple, OPI's NICs sticks varnish range is free of them but as far as i'm aware nail envy is still the same old formula. http://www.nailaidcares.com/detox.php
This is so useful. I sadly have never had decent nails. If I've wanted to show off then it's had to have been acrylics for me- and then sometimes six weeks before my actual nails fully recover from the damage.
My nails are thin- bendy like thin card- and pathetic. :-( I'm sure I've seen that OPI NailEnvy mentioned on here before. I have to get it, clearly! Do you think it would work for me Mazza?
The first thing I would say is to look at any possible changes in your diet. If there are none and your health status hasn't changed then the most beneficial advice I can give anyone is to become a slave to cucicle oil. Use it at least twice daily but preferably every time you get your hands wet. Keep some by your basin and sink to remind you to use it.
Water causes the nail to swell, as it then dries it develops minute cracks and splits...a bit like wood does. Using cuticle oil helps to waterproof your nails a little preventing much of this damage so rubber gloves for washing up is a must. Massaging cuticle oil in all around nail bed and nail also increases blood flow to the nail matrix which in turn encourages healthier and faster nail growth. You can use a nail hardener...Sally Hansen is pretty good without breaking the bank but be aware that hardeners tend to make the nail more brittle so if you do knock one its more likely to snap instead of just bend.
